Ask Richard Parks

Richard Parks, the adventurer and former rugby player, is presenting a new series on S4C.  24 Awr Newidiodd Gymru (24 Hours That Changed Wales) discusses significant events in Welsh history, and can be seen every Tuesday night at 9.00pm.

Richard is learning Welsh, and this is the first time he has presented a series in Welsh.  He took part in Iaith ar Daith in 2022, and practises speaking Welsh with Aran Jones, who created the  SaySomethinginWelsh ap.

Here, we chat to Richard about the series and more…

What’s the best thing about learning Welsh?

Welsh has given me a different relationship with my country.  I have always been a proud Welshman however, for me, it’s been a gateway to a better understanding of who we are.

What was it like taking part in Iaith ar Daith?

It was awesome, and it changed my life.  The production team along with SaySomethinginWelsh were amazing, as was my learning partner, Lowri Morgan.

Do you like presenting in Welsh?

I love it, although I was very nervous before I started filming.  I couldn’t have done it without my team.  This project will always be one of my proudest achievements, and I’d love to present in Welsh again one day.

Where did the interest in Welsh history come from?

I’ve always been interested in history.  Growing up, I felt like I didn’t fit in anywhere, as my Mum is of Jamaican heritage and my Dad of Welsh heritage.  This frustration, and becoming a father, were the catalyst for me to make 24 Awr.

What are your plans for 2025?

We are Wales, a children’s book is due to be released soon, which I’m proud to have contributed to.  I also hope to start production on another Welsh history series.  Every day I work on my Welsh, using my SaySomethinginWelsh app, and I spend a day a month in north Wales practising my Welsh with Aran Jones.

Any advice to others about learning Welsh?

You only need five or ten minutes a day and remember to make it fun!
