Asking Mari – Learn Welsh Tutors of Tomorrow
Here’s Mari Hefin, one of the students who followed the Tutors of Tomorrow (Tiwtoriaid Yfory) 2025 course, the National Centre for Learning Welsh’s training scheme that introduces the Learn Welsh for Adults sector. Originally from Aberystwyth, Mari now lives in Cardiff. Mari studied History and Politics at university before going on to complete a master's degree in Welsh at Cardiff University.
We asked Mari about the course…
Why did you want to do the Tutors of Tomorrow course?
I have a passion for the Welsh language, and I wanted to share that with others. I was also looking for an opportunity to develop my teaching skills in a supportive and purposeful way.
How was the course?
The course was fantastic – I enjoyed every single moment. Every day was different, and it was great to meet new people. It was taught in a supportive and inspiring environment.
What kind of sessions did you have?
We had sessions on teaching techniques, lesson planning, using Learn Welsh resources, and creating a positive learning environment. There were also practical sessions where we had the opportunity to lead activities and receive feedback.
What was the best thing about the course?
One of the best aspects of the course was the opportunity to meet people – whether they were learners or tutors. A particular highlight for me was leading a session myself for the first time; although I was a little nervous, the experience was extremely valuable and gave me confidence as a tutor.
You've since started to work as a tutor – congratulations! Where?
Yes – I teach Welsh to adults at Cardiff Met University as part of the National Centre for Learning Welsh's provision for the education sector, through both face-to-face and online sessions. I teach university students and some members of staff, too.
What’s the best thing about being a Learn Welsh tutor?
The best thing about being a Learn Welsh tutor is seeing learners gain confidence and start using the Welsh language in their everyday lives. It’s a privilege to be part of their linguistic journey and to share my love for the language with them. I also enjoy being creative when planning lessons and developing exciting, interesting and appropriate sessions that meet the learners' needs.
What would you say to anyone considering a career as a Learn Welsh tutor?
Go for it! It’s incredibly rewarding work, and the support available is excellent. If you have a passion for the language and enjoy helping others, it's a great career path.
