Meet Katarina

Katarina Roberts comes from Slovakia but now lives in Rhydypennau near Aberystwyth.  

She learns Welsh with Learn Welsh Ceredigion, Powys and Carmarthenshire, which runs courses on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.  

This year, she won the 'Cymraeg yn y Cartref Learner’ award, which is the Learn Welsh scheme for parents and carers, at the National Eisteddfod.  

Here, we ask Katarina about her Learn Welsh journey… 

Where do you learn Welsh? 

I learn Welsh in Aberystwyth.  I go to a face-to-face class three times a week.  This year, I passed the Entry level exam. 

Why did you decide to learn Welsh? 

I told my husband that I would learn Welsh after moving to Wales. 

How important is it to be able to use the language at home with the children? 

I want to show my children that learning new things can be worthwhile, and I want to help them with their homework.  I practise speaking Welsh with the children, when I'm shopping, or with friends during the children's rugby matches. 

What did it feel like to receive the award at the National Eisteddfod? 

It felt like a dream, and I am so proud to have received the award. 

What is your goal with Welsh in the future?  

I want to continue learning Welsh and pass the next exam.  Speaking Welsh is an advantage when applying for jobs in this area.  I want to study to become a midwife, and use Welsh while working in the local community. 

What advice would you give to learners who want to learn Welsh?  

You can succeed, so go for it.  Remember to ask others for help - my family and my tutor, Rhiannon Taylor, have been very supportive.
