Intensive Learn Welsh Courses (Sabbatical Scheme) 2025-26

These are opportunities to Learn Welsh in a short amount of time through intensive learning over a specific time period.

You can read more about the types of courses available in 2025-26 on this page, and details on how to apply are below. Please note that the closing date for September 2025 applications was 20 February 2025.

The courses are provided by 3 providers, servicing 3 geographical areas:

  • North Wales (Isle of Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbigh, Flint and Wrexham)
  • Mid and South West (Powys, Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, City and County of Swansea, and Neath Port Talbot)
  • South Wales (Bridgend, Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Caerphilly, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Newport City, Monmouthshire)

 

Autumn and Spring Term (Terms 1 and 2)

The Two Term Course is available throughout Wales.

Intensive Two Term Course

The Intensive Two Term Course is an opportunity for Education Practitioners to develop their Welsh language skills during the Autumn and Spring Terms (Terms 1 and 2).

For whom? Primary school Teachers in English medium schools who already have some basic Welsh language skills (Foundation Phase Teacher and/or KS2).

Level: Foundation and Intermediate

Term 1 (Autumn Term) - Foundation Level

Term 2 (Spring Term) - Intermediate Level          

Learning Method: Tutor-led combined provision in a group under - face to face learning as well as virtual lessons.

Location: 3 virtual days and 2 days in a local 'Hub'

Course Aim: 

  • To learn the language and how to teach the Welsh language effectively across the curriculum in school.
  • Teachers are taught about language teaching methodologies so that they’ll have the necessary skills to raise Welsh standards back in school.
  • After completing both terms, you may be able to follow a continuation course on the Advanced Lefel during the Summer Term, but there won't be finance for supply costs during Term 3.

During the Summer Term (Term 3), the courses vary across the 3 regions.Details for Summer Term 2026 will be released in due course, and the details will be available on this page. The application process will also open on this page in due course. 

Applying for an Intensive Course (Sabbatical Scheme)

How to apply?

Applications for the Intensive Learn Welsh Courses (Sabbatical Scheme) 2025-26 are made online via this site. There are three steps to the application process:

1) Application Form to be completed by the Practitioner (teacher/teaching assistant)

2) Supporting Form to be completed by a School Leader

3) Supporting Form to be completed by the Local Authority

When all 3 online forms have been presented, the application will be assessed.

You should ensure that the 3 parts of the application have been completed by the closing date (20 February 2025 for September 2025 courses).
