A spokesperson for the National Centre for Learning Welsh said:
“Gwilym Roberts was a leading figure in the Welsh language community and inspired thousands of people to learn and enjoy the language. He was a prominent member of the team which ran very intensive evening courses at the Urdd Centre in Cardiff, all on a voluntary basis.
“Born and raised in Cardiff, Gwilym worked as a Welsh teacher in three primary schools before taking early retirement and turning to teaching Welsh to adults, both in Wales and in Patagonia.
“He was passionate about the Welsh language, an exceptional communicator, and a very special tutor.
“Gwilym was the first recipient of the National Centre for Learning Welsh’s Aled Roberts Memorial Award in 2024, given in recognition of his significant voluntary contribution to the Learn Welsh sector.
“Gwilym will be greatly missed, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family and wide circle of friends in Cardiff and beyond.”
