Ask Dean

Dean Flynn is following a Learn Welsh course with the National Centre for Learning Welsh, and uses the language both in the workplace and with his family.

Dean works as a building services manager, and has recently completed the new leisure centre in Llanelli, Pentre Awel.

Here, we chat to Dean about his language journey...

Where do you live?

I’m originally from Luton, Bedfordshire, but I moved to Carmarthenshire in 2019.

Why did you start learning Welsh?

When I moved to Cross Hands, I enrolled my children into Ysgol Gorslas – they are now fluent Welsh speakers, which makes me very proud.  I felt it was important to learn myself, so I can help them a little with their homework.

What level are you on?

I have recently completed Entry level.  I sat my exam in June, and I passed which made me very proud.

What is the best thing about learning Welsh?

Being able to understand more, and feeling part of Wales and the local community.

What difference has learning Welsh made to you?

It has made me feel part of the community.  Also, my Gran is from Connah’s Quay in north Wales, and she is so proud of me and my children.  It’s nice to know I am making her happy.

How do you practise speaking Welsh outside the classroom?

I speak to my children and ask them things likeWyt ti eisiau?’ (Do you want?) or ‘Beth sy’n bod’ (What’s wrong?).  I also have a number of colleagues who speak Welsh, so I try to use Welsh at work.

Any advice for other learners who want to start learning Welsh?

Keep positive!  The language offers so much - I have made new friends, and it has opened new doors.

Your next step with Welsh?

I want to carry on improving my Welsh, so the next step is to keep learning, and continue to Sylfaen level (Foundation).
