Here, we chat to Jackie about her language journey...
Where do you live?
I was born in Neath, but I grew up in Canada. I’ve lived in Login, Carmarthenshire, for 31 years.
Tell us more about your holiday business…
We have a cosy, relaxing holiday cabin where guests can unwind and enjoy the countryside. The cabin is eco-friendly and made with upcycled and local, organic materials.
How do you use your Welsh at work?
I use simple Welsh phrases in the welcome notes and cards we give to guests. I also use my Welsh with guests and contractors.
Why did you start learning Welsh?
My children have all left home, and they’ve learnt Welsh. Now that I have a bit more time, I wanted to learn too. My grandson is almost two and is being brought up bilingually, so I enjoy speaking to him in Welsh.
What difference has learning Welsh made to you?
I really enjoy learning Welsh, and it gives me something to think about when I’m doing my chores. I also feel more connected to Welsh culture.
How else do you practise speaking Welsh outside the classroom?
I speak Welsh with my grandson and with my son. I also have friends who are Welsh speakers.
Any advice for other learners who want to start learning Welsh?
Just start - if you keep putting it off, time slips by. The classes are fun, and Duolingo also helps with learning.
Your next step with Welsh?
I hope to move on to the next level, Canolradd (Intermediate), and to find a local conversation group where I can practise speaking Welsh.
