Ask Jessica

Jessica Griffiths, a teacher and piano tutor from Wrexham, is currently following an intensive Learn Welsh course through the National Centre for Learning Welsh’s programme for the education workforce. As part of the two-term course, she attends Welsh classes at Canolfan Bedwyr in St Asaph two days a week and continues learning virtually from home for three days a week.

Having completed the Sylfaen (Foundation) course in autumn 2025, Jessica is now nearing the end of the Canolradd (Intermediate) course in spring 2026. As well as developing her Welsh-language skills, the course includes guidance on how to transfer the language in the classroom.

We asked Jessica about her Welsh-language journey.

Why did you want to learn Welsh?

I wanted to learn Welsh so that I could use the language at work. Speaking Welsh opens doors for me.

Where do you work?

I’m a teacher at St Mary’s School, Brymbo, an English-medium school. I also work as a piano tutor after school, and some of my pupils are Welsh speakers, so I use the language during their lessons.

How do you usually use Welsh at school?

I teach Year Five and Six and use Welsh every day at school. I teach Welsh lessons to the children and try to integrate the language into every lesson.

How do you practise speaking Welsh outside the classroom?

I enjoy speaking Welsh outside the classroom whenever I can. I speak a little Welsh at home with my partner, and if I know someone can speak the language, then I’ll speak to them in Welsh.

What’s the best thing about learning Welsh?

I feel proud to speak Welsh and feel more connected to our culture. I enjoy following a course with fellow teachers who are in the same situation as me. I feel confident about my future and where the language will lead me.

What’s your advice for other people who want to learn Welsh?

My advice is not to be afraid! Mistakes help you learn, and speak as much Welsh as you possibly can.

What’s next with learning Welsh?

I'll be finishing the course in April. When I return to school, I’ll be speaking Welsh with my colleagues and continuing to practise and build on my skills. I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to speak Welsh with others and the support of the tutors.
