Ask John

John Smith is learning Welsh with Learn Welsh Swansea Bay Area, which is run by Swansea University on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.  John started learning Welsh after moving to Wales in 2021.

What’s your background?
I’m originally from Scotland, but I was raised in England.  I lived in Essex before moving to Wales.

How long have you been learning Welsh?
I started learning Welsh with SaySomethinginWelsh after moving to Wales.  I joined a face-to-face course in September 2022.  I’ve passed the Entry and Foundation levels.  Now, I’m following an Intermediate course.

Why did you start learning Welsh?
My daughter has lived in Wales for 10 years.  I fell in love with life in Wales and started to take an interest in the Welsh language and culture.  Also, I wanted to meet new people, and become part of the local community.

What have you enjoyed most about learning Welsh?
I love learning Welsh.  My favourite thing is reading stories in Welsh.  I enjoy discovering new authors, and now I’m trying to read Welsh poetry.  But, most of all, I enjoy learning with new friends.

What advice do you have for other learners?
Enjoy the course and try to take part in other available events.  Take advantage of every opportunity to speak Welsh in the community.

Apart from classes, how do you practise speaking Welsh?
I read the news on the BBC Cymru Fyw app every day.  I also read books from the Amdani series.  I use iPlayer and S4C Clic to watch Welsh-language programmes.  I go to the pub to chat or sing with my friends.

How has your life changed since learning Welsh?
I’ve met new people and made many friends.  I’ve discovered interesting places, and learned about Welsh history.

What’s the next step in your language journey?
I want to finish the Intermediate course, and maybe sit the exam.  Then, I’ll start the Advanced course.
