Ask Kathy

Here, we chat to Kathy Jones, Learner Support Officer for Learn Welsh Glamorgan, which is run by the University of South Wales on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
Kathy is a Welsh tutor and organises events for learners in the area. She loves her job and tells us more about her role…
Where are you from, and where do you live now?
I’m from Merthyr and still live there. I used to live at the bottom of the valley, but now I live at the top of the valley.
Your favourite thing about being a tutor?
I love seeing learners’ confidence grow, from the very first class and through the levels.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
I’m a Welsh tutor, but I’m also responsible for creating opportunities for learners to practise their Welsh. I contact partners, businesses, charities, groups and individuals who offer learners opportunities to use their Welsh in the community.
Who do you work with locally?
The Menter Iaith language initiatives, County Councils, University of South Wales, schools, museums, pubs, cafes and castles. By working in partnership, we find opportunities for learners to practise their Welsh outside the classroom - things like coffee mornings, walks, quiz nights, visits and so on.
Is there an event that stands out in your memory?
The 2025 Rhondda Cynon Taf Eisteddfod. A very busy event, but I absolutely loved speaking with local learners and those from further afield.
What difference does taking part in events outside the classroom make for learners?
This is where learners really get hold of the language, the chance to speak freely and naturally, without structure. It’s an opportunity to make learning mistakes, but to have fun in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
Any advice for new tutors?
Relax and enjoy. Ask for advice, your mentor is always there to help you.
What’s your advice for people learning Welsh?
No one is perfect, so go for it!
