Ask Louis

Louis Churcher began learning Welsh two years ago, and this September, he will be starting an Intermediate-level course with Learn Welsh Glamorgan, which is run by the University of South Wales on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
Louis enjoys speaking Welsh at his local gym, where he practises Jujitsu, and also uses Welsh at work with Caerphilly County Council.
Why did you start learning Welsh?
I started learning Welsh because I wanted to use Welsh at work. Along the way, I fell in love with the language.
What’s the best thing about learning Welsh?
The best things about learning Welsh are having the chance to meet interesting people from all backgrounds, and learning more about Welsh history.
What difference has learning Welsh made to you?
Learning Welsh has greatly helped build my confidence, and it’s opened many doors in all aspects of my life.
How do you practise speaking Welsh outside the classroom?
I use SaySomethinginWelsh every day, go to Welsh meet-ups in Newport, and speak Welsh with people at my gym and at work.
What’s your job?
I work as a clerical assistant with Caerphilly County Council, and I use Welsh every day when communicating with colleagues or speaking to residents.
Where did your interest in Jujitsu come from?
My interest in Jujitsu started from watching MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) when I was younger. I began training with Celtic Pride MMA in 2021, and I fell in love with the sport. I train regularly and compete when I can.
Any advice for other learners?
Speak Welsh as much as possible - whether that’s to yourself, to other learners, or to fluent speakers - and make the most of all the great resources available.
Your next step with Welsh?
I passed my Sylfaen (Foundation) exam this year, and I’ll be starting Canolradd (Intermediate) course in September. I’m incredibly excited to continue my Welsh journey, and I can’t wait to see my tutors Gareth and Ruth.
