Cardiff singer SJ learning Welsh, thanks to Y Llais

We’ve seen several Welsh learners on Y Llais on S4C, which is The Voice talent show in Welsh. And one of those is Stephen Hill, or SJ as he is known on the programme, who is originally from Rumney in Cardiff.
SJ performs on the programme with his friend Endaf and is part of coach, Aleighcia Scott’s team.
We had a word with SJ about his journey on Y Llais so far
Do you enjoy singing in Welsh on Y Llais?
It’s been a massive challenge for me, but I’ve absolutely loved it. I’ve also got a few Welsh songs under my belt now.
I usually read the lyrics in English first to understand the meaning, and then I learn the Welsh words. It can be challenging, but I love it.
Since starting to learn Welsh, I feel a little sad that I didn't take the language seriously at school.
Is this your first time singing in Welsh?
No, this is not the first time. Endaf and I have performed at the National Eisteddfod and on S4C's Heno magazine programme in Welsh.
Before I met Endaf about two years ago, I had no contact with the language and Endaf has opened a door to a new world for me. I hadn't heard Welsh music before.
After performing at the Eisteddfod and on Heno, and seeing how nice and welcoming people are, I thought maybe I should learn the language.
I also saw that Aleighcia, who comes from the same area as me in Cardiff, was learning Welsh. This also gave me a boost to start learning.
What’s it like to be on a Welsh language programme like Y Llais?
It's an amazing experience. The whole team are so friendly and are encouraging me to continue learning Welsh.
Endaf has also been fantastic and helps me a lot – I’m so glad that we’re doing the programme together.
I certainly want to carry on learning Welsh after the show is over.
