Getting to know Benedict, owner of The Little Welsh Dresser

A new initiative called ‘Welsh for Carmarthenshire Businesses’ is helping businesses embrace and promote the Welsh language. Over 23 businesses have signed up for Learn Welsh courses for beginners, with Benedict Vaughan-Morris, owner of The Little Welsh Dresser, being one of them.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Shwmae! I’m Benedict, I have a shop in my hometown, Llandeilo, called ‘The Little Welsh Dresser’. We sell a range of Welsh gifts, cards, and blankets and specialise in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for furniture.
Why did you want to learn Welsh?
I left primary and secondary school with very little Welsh. Many of my friends can speak Welsh, and I wanted to be able to speak the language too. Now with the shop and my own young children being fluent in Welsh, I was keen and inspired to give the language a go again.
When did you start learning?
Although I’ve tried learning Welsh on many occasions, I realised I needed to go back to the beginning. I started the most recent course at the beginning of 2024.
What was it like learning Welsh with other local businesses?
It’s been great learning with like-minded people, and I’m excited to start the next course in the new year which should improve both my Welsh and my confidence.
How do you use your Welsh in the shop?
It’s mainly giving instructions and thanking customers at the moment. My understanding of Welsh has really improved.
Do you get to use your Welsh in your local area?
There’s certainly the opportunity, I feel the Welsh language is growing and growing in its use in Llandeilo, which is lovely to hear!
What difference has learning Welsh made to the business?
So far it’s helped me understand my customers' needs better. I know once I take the next step in being more confident in giving it a go, it’ll be a real boost in putting my customers at ease, chatting in the language they prefer.
What’s the best thing about learning Welsh?
It’s a journey at the moment, but I’m really enjoying it and know it’ll benefit both my business and personal life.
What’s your advice for other people who want to learn Welsh?
Give it a go, and learning via Zoom is really working for me.
What’s next with learning Welsh?
I’ve just finished the Entry 1 and 2 course, and will start the Foundation course this month!
