Getting to know Foo Seng, ‘New Welsh Speaker’ Award-Winner

Originally from Malaysia, Foo Seng Thean and his family moved to Swansea in 2015. Foo Seng was the winner of the ‘New Welsh Speaker’ Award at this year’s Inspire! Adult Learning Awards, organised by the Learning and Work Institute.

Foo Seng is learning Welsh with Learn Welsh Swansea Bay, which is run by Swansea University on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.

We caught up with Foo Seng to learn more about his Welsh-language journey…

Why did you want to learn Welsh?

To better understand and appreciate the culture, and to feel that I belong here.

Since when have you been learning Welsh?

I started Mynediad (Entry-level), for beginners, in October 2022. I have just started the Intermediate course.

Llongyfarchiadau – congratulations on winning the New Welsh Speaker award. How did that feel?

I feel very happy because my hard work is being recognised. It’s an amazing feeling.

How do you use your Welsh outside the classroom?

I practise with my sons and use Welsh at work at the Chinese in Wales Association. I’m a member of a Welsh learners’ choir and enjoy speaking Welsh with the choir members. I also enjoy watching Learn Welsh videos on YouTube.

What difference has learning Welsh made to you?

I’ve met so many lovely people along the way and feel a stronger connection to the community. Learning Welsh has also increased my confidence at work.

What’s the best thing about learning Welsh?

The people, and the sense of belonging.

What’s your advice for Welsh learners?

Be patient.

What’s your favourite Welsh word?

“Os gwelwch yn dda” (a way of saying “please”) – it sounds fancy!

What’s the next step with learning Welsh?

I’m planning to listen to and read more in Welsh. I want to improve my Welsh speaking skills by talking to more people. I’ve been writing lately, and I find that it’s helping me. I also plan to continue singing in Welsh.
