Getting to know Jason

Originally from Chester, Jason Kilshaw tells us about his Welsh language journey, and his love for Wales and the Welsh language.
Jason is learning Welsh with Learn Welsh North East, which is run by Coleg Cambria on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
Since when have you been learning Welsh?
I’ve been learning Welsh since October 2022.
Why did you want to learn Welsh?
I began learning Welsh after a holiday in Pwllheli, and very quickly fell in love with the language.
What do you do?
I’m a primary school teacher in Manchester but I’d love to work in a primary school in Wales one day.
How are you learning?
I’m learning Welsh with Learn Welsh North East at Coleg Cambria, Wrexham. I usually go on the Cwrs Haf (Summer Course), but I can’t go this year because I’m working. I like going on courses in Nant Gwrtheyrn too.
Where and when do you use your Welsh?
I enjoy going to the monthly Welsh meetings in Chester, and to Saith Seren, the Welsh Centre in Wrexham. I also attend courses in Garth Newydd, Lampeter. Since starting to learn Welsh, I often go on holiday to Caernarfon. I enjoy chatting to the local people in the pubs and shops, and I've made good friends there. I love Caernarfon, it's a great place.
Do you use your Welsh outside the classroom?
I enjoy listening to Welsh language music. I love Fleur de Lys, and Gwilym. I love the song ‘Dawnsia’ by Fleur de Lys - it’s brilliant.
I also like to write. Since January 2025, I’ve been writing a column for Cara, a Welsh language magazine for women. I have three sisters, and I’m passionate about current issues affecting women.
The National Eisteddfod is coming to Wrexham! Are you going?
Yes, I’m going for the whole week and will be volunteering in Maes D, the Welsh learners’ village.
What’s the best thing about learning Welsh?
Friends. I’ve made so many friends since starting to learn Welsh. It was quite difficult at university, as I lived and studied from home. Since learning Welsh, I’ve met lots of lovely people.
I received the Welsh Learner of the Year award at Coleg Cambria’s 2025 Student Awards. It’s such a great feeling. My tutor, Emma Burton, is fantastic.
What’s your advice to other people who are learning Welsh?
Try. People are always happy to talk to those who try to speak Welsh. I’ve never had a negative experience. Just give it a go and don’t worry too much.
Learning Welsh – what’s the next step for you?
I’m going on a course in Bala in August with Stephen Rule, Doctor Cymraeg, and I’ll be starting the Canolradd (Intermediate) course in September.
