Getting to know Nell

Getting to know Nell

Nell Johnson, aged 22, works as a manager at ‘The Shed’ restaurant, in Swansea. Nell is currently learning Welsh on the free learning programme for 16-25 year-olds, led by the National Centre for Learning Welsh.

We spoke with Nell to learn more about her and her Welsh-language journey.

What inspired you to start learning Welsh?

My partner and his family are Welsh speakers, and the language means a lot to them. I want to learn so I can speak with them in Welsh.

I went to Bishopston Comprehensive School, which is an English-medium school, where I learnt some Welsh. In September 2025, I decided to sign up for a Learn Welsh course and commit to learning Welsh to develop my skills and confidence.

How are you learning Welsh?

I’m currently following the Mynediad (Entry) course for beginners. The class is held online every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm.

The tutor, Kayleigh, and the lessons are great. Everyone has their cameras and microphones on, so it’s very interactive. There’s a good mix of people of different ages. I really enjoy the lessons as they give me structure.

Do you practise your Welsh outside the classroom?

Yes – my partner’s family speak Welsh, so I’m now surrounded by the language quite a lot. When I’m with them, I try to practise and reply in Welsh.

There are also quite a few Welsh speakers at work. They know I’m learning, so they often test me and give me a chance to practise, which is really helpful.

I also use Duolingo, which I’ve been using for about a year and a half now.

What do you enjoy most about learning Welsh?

I find it really fun and inspiring. The class itself has that sense of community and I’ve made new friends.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy dancing and I’ve started running, too. I recently ran the Llanelli Half Marathon and finished 36th, which I was really pleased with.

What would you say to someone thinking about learning Welsh?

I’d definitely say that the Learn Welsh courses are a great place to start, and they’re free for people under 25. My advice would be to just go for it and immerse yourself in the language as much as you can.
