Hannah and Maes D at Wrexham National Eisteddfod

Hannah Wright is the Chair of Maes D, the Welsh learners’ village at the Wrexham National Eisteddfod, which is being held 2 – 9 August 2025. Here’s more about Hannah and Maes D.
What can we expect in Maes D this year?
There are different stands in Maes D, including the ‘Tipi’, which will host performances by artists and bands, as well as interesting panel discussions and podcast recordings.
Also appearing at the Wrexham Eisteddfod for the first time will be ‘Doctor Cymraeg’ (Stephen Rule). The Doctor will visit Maes D every day between 12pm and 1pm. Learners will be able to ask the Doctor about Welsh language matters, and he may offer them a prescription that could be a task, a resource or something else!
Teas and coffees will be on offer at the Welsh Government Stand, where learners will be running the café – everyone is looking forward to practising speaking Welsh.
And remember to visit the Nant Gwrtheyrn and Learn Welsh North East Information stands, which are also part of Maes D.
What are you looking forward to most at the Eisteddfod?
I always enjoy the comedy sessions at Encore and the Pabell Lên literature tent. I’m also looking forward to the last Saturday night of the Eisteddfod when there will be a big show on the Maes to close the Eisteddfod.
Have you enjoyed being Chair of Maes D?
Yes, I've really enjoyed it! I was nervous at first - I've never chaired a committee before! But I have really enjoyed working with learners, planning all the sessions for Maes D. It will be very nice to see everyone at the Eisteddfod volunteering.
Where should we visit while we’re in the area?
I would visit Wrexham town Centre first of all - there are many nice little cafes there that make a good cuppa!
And if there's time, I would also go to see the Froncysyllte Aqueduct, a World Heritage Site. You can cross the aqueduct by foot or hire a boat - just don't look down!
What’s your advice to the Chair of Maes D at the 2026 National Eisteddfod?
Don't overthink and worry about things! The Eisteddfod staff are there to guide you and ensure that you’re on the right path.
Tomos Hopkins is the Chair of Maes D in 2026 and next week, we’ll be speaking with him to hear about the preparations for the Garreg Las National Eisteddfod.
