Meet Caroline

Meet Caroline

Dr Caroline Jones is the Head of Child Psychology for Gwynedd and Anglesey, and works as a consultant clinical psychologist for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Caroline moved to North Wales in 2004 to study at Bangor University.  After learning the language, she now uses Welsh every day in her work, and with her family.

Here, we ask Caroline about her language journey...

Where do you live?

I was raised in London, but I now live near Llanrug with my family.

Why learn Welsh?

I was fascinated by the bilingual signs when I first moved here, and wanted to know how to pronounce the names. Also, I wanted to show respect to the culture and communicate better with patients.

How have you learned Welsh?

I started with an Wlpan course in Bangor.  I have followed many courses over the years, such as the National Centre for Learning Welsh’s programmes for workplaces, and residential courses at Nant Gwrtheyrn.  Now, I have one-to-one lessons and also attend group sessions for learners at Advanced level.

Do you use Welsh at work?

Yes, I use Welsh regularly.  I speak Welsh with colleagues and families, and I also send bilingual emails.

Do you use Welsh outside the classroom?

Yes, I speak Welsh at home with my children, who are bilingual.  I also speak Welsh in the community and enjoy practising my Welsh by speaking to other learners in ‘Cinio Clebran’ (Chat over lunch).

Why is it important to offer services in Welsh?

It is essential in order to speak with children and understand their needs in their own language.

What do you enjoy most about speaking Welsh?

I enjoy being able to communicate with others and seeing the positive effect that has.

What would you say to someone who is considering learning Welsh?

Use the words that you already have, and go for it!
