Meet Katherine
Katherine Grieb lives in Virginia in the United States, and over the summer, she sat the Foundation level Learn Welsh exam here in Wales.
She learns Welsh with Learn Welsh Glamorgan, which runs courses on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh, and has already registered to follow an Intermediate level course in September.
Here, we ask Katherine about her Learn Welsh journey…
How long have you been learning Welsh?
I have been learning Welsh for four years.
How do you learn Welsh?
I follow an online class with Learn Welsh Glamorgan. I also use Duolingo every day.
Why did you start learning Welsh and decide to travel from Virginia to Wales?
I studied canon law at Cardiff University and heard the language for the first time. Welsh is one of the most beautiful languages in the world.
What is the best thing about learning Welsh?
The best thing is when I get the answer right, without having to search for the answer!
What is your goal with Welsh in the future?
I hope to be able to preach and teach through the medium of Welsh in Wales one day.
What was it like, sitting the exam in Wales?
It was a great experience. The tutors are fantastic. They support their learners every step of the way. I am so grateful that I can learn Welsh online!
Have you travelled around Wales?
Wales is so beautiful. My favourite place is the cathedral in St Davids, but I also enjoyed visiting the museum in Aberystwyth, because I loved seeing the work of the artist and poet David Jones.
