National Centre’s positive impact on strengthening bilingual skills in workplaces

National Centre’s positive impact on strengthening bilingual skills in workplaces

The National Centre for Learning Welsh has welcomed Estyn’s latest report, which praises its flexible and comprehensive Welsh language training programmes for workplaces across Wales.

The report highlights how the Centre works collaboratively with employers, providers and stakeholders to tailor programmes to meet a wide range of needs, and since 2018, over 30,000 employees and 2,000 employers have taken part.

Flexible learning opportunities

The programmes include intensive courses, confidence-building support, and online self-study modules. The Centre also leads tailored projects for specific sectors such as Health and Social Care and Local Authorities.

Provision is also delivered in well-known organisations such as the Football Association of Wales, Welsh Rugby Union, Wrexham AFC and the Ospreys Rugby Club, helping to normalise the use of Welsh in sectors that influence people’s everyday lives.

Transforming less confident speakers

According to Estyn, one of the most successful features is the way the Centre supports less confident speakers and learners at Intermediate and above levels, helping them become active Welsh speakers in a relatively short time. Skilled tutors, based within different sectors, are able to respond creatively to the needs of the workforce and drive real change in the use of the language.

Looking Ahead

Estyn recommends the Centre continues to work closely with providers and employers, ensuring courses meet vocational needs and that staff receive practical support and meaningful opportunities to use their Welsh in the workplace.
