The CEFR: A clear pathway to learning Welsh
It's easier than ever to learn Welsh, thanks to a wide range of courses based on a national curriculum which gives learners a clear pathway to using and enjoying the language.
Developed by language learning experts at the National Centre for Learning Welsh, the courses are aligned with the learning levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Courses are available on five learning levels:
- Mynediad / Entry (beginners)
- Sylfaen / Foundation
- Canolradd / Intermediate
- Uwch / Advanced
- Gloywi / Proficiency (for fluent learners and first language speakers)
So, what exactly is the CEFR, and how does it help?
The CEFR is a well-known framework to describe what language learners can do as they progress through different stages of learning. It comprises different levels: A1 and A2 (basic users), B1 and B2 (independent users), and C1 and C2 (proficient users). It’s designed to take you from beginner level to fluency, with practical steps and clear objectives, showing exactly what you can do with the language at different stages.
The Learn Welsh courses reflect the CEFR, and have been carefully planned by the Centre’s language learning and acquisition team to guide you from understanding basic phrases to confidently engaging through the medium of Welsh.
