A conversation with Michael Stalman
Picture caption: Michael, right, pictured at a Learn Welsh course in Nant Gwrtheyrn, with fellow student Paul Woodhouse.
Michael Stalman grew up in Holyhead and now lives in Llangefni with his partner and two children. He works at Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi as head of the science department.
Although he studied Welsh at school, Michael has not spoken the language since leaving school.
By now, he is ready to re-learn the language, and has been on a special Learn Welsh course for teachers with the National Centre for Learning Welsh.
We had a word with Michael about his journey to gain confidence to speak Welsh again.
What’s your story with the Welsh language?
I studied Welsh at school but there wasn't much encouragement at home, and I didn't work at all for my Welsh exam. I now live with a partner who speaks Welsh as a first language and have two children who are fluent in the language. I also work in a school where the Welsh language is encouraged. I want to be able to speak Welsh.
Do you enjoy learning Welsh?
Yes. I hear Welsh around me every day, but before coming on this course, I didn't have the confidence to speak it.
I want to be able to speak Welsh with my family and I want the children at school to speak Welsh with me. I want to make sure they will still have the opportunity to chat with me and other teachers in Welsh while they are at school
I am very happy and excited that I am learning Welsh.
And in the future?
I want to be completely fluent in Welsh and I want to be able to help my children with their science homework in Welsh.
The dream would be to learn through the medium of Welsh - speak Welsh all day at school and then come home to the Welsh-speaking family.
I wouldn’t have to speak any English then, as even the dog understands Welsh in our house!
