A new contemporary lesson

A new contemporary lesson

A new contemporary lesson will give learners a taste of the latest production by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, the national Welsh language theatre of Wales, 'Nyrsys' (Nurses).

The National Centre for Learning Welsh has created the lesson, which includes exercises, interviews, video clips, vocabulary and discussion points.

This year sees the Health Service celebrate 70 years, and 'Nyrsys', which is written by Bethan Marlow and directed by Sara Lloyd, gives an insight into a busy cancer ward at a hospital in modern-day Wales. The script and songs, written by Rhys Taylor and Bethan Marlow, focus on the experiences of nurses - the challenges and fun of following this vocation.

'Nyrsys' is also a ‘word-for-word’ play, which means the dialogue has come directly from real life nurses. The language is lively and natural and features dialect, and so the play is a great opportunity for learners to hear the language, and practise it beyond the classroom.

It's nice to be able to present this lively, spoken language for learners to learn, use and enjoy. The lesson will also be a means of introducing our contemporary culture to those who are learning Welsh. The Centre has already created lessons based on the productions of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, which have proved popular with our learners, and we're pleased to continue this partnership.

Helen Prosser, Director of Strategy at the National Centre for Learning Welsh

We’re delighted that a Theatr Genedlaethol production, for the second time this year, is a theme for one of the contemporary lessons prepared by the National Centre for Learning Welsh. It is crucial to us that our productions are seen and enjoyed by Welsh learners. This is a very valuable partnership between two national bodies.

Rhian Davies, Executive Producer of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru

The lesson, which is one in a series of contemporary lessons created every year by the Centre, will be taught to Advanced level students (experienced learners) in classes across Wales. The lesson is also available, as a free resource, on the Centre's Interactive Site, www.learnwelsh.cymru

During the performances, it will also be possible to use the app created by Galactig and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, 'Sibrwd', which offers a live audio English translation for non-Welsh speakers and Welsh beginners.

The tour starts on 6 November at 'Pontio', Bangor. There are pre-show talks for Welsh learners available at a few of the venues on the tour. For more information about these talks and a full list of performances visit www.theatr.cymru
