Ask Mike
Mike Brown lives in Merthyr, and is learning Welsh with Learn Welsh Gwent, which is run by Coleg Gwent on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh. Here is a bit about him:
Who do you speak Welsh with/where do you practise?
I attend two classes with Learn Welsh Gwent. I also take part in the Siarad scheme and have one-on-one lessons with a tutor every week. I do many things in the community, such as going for a walk with Menter Iaith Caerffili, and attend a monthly coffee morning. There are many opportunities to practise Welsh in the area, I'm very lucky!
What is the best thing about learning Welsh?
Joining a new culture – it opens doors to a new world.
What difference has learning Welsh made to you?
My life is richer, because I've learned so much about Welsh culture.
Do you like watching S4C or listening to BBC Radio Cymru?
Sometimes, I watch S4C Clic with subtitles. I enjoy listening to Radio Cymru, programmes like Dros Frecwast and Post Prynhawn. I also listen to podcasts like 'Siarad Moel' and 'Pigion.'
Any advice for other learners who want to start learning Welsh?
Find the right group, and practise with others as much as possible. It can be a lot of fun!
Do you hope to continue to learn Welsh?
Absolutely!
