Opportunities for students to become Welsh Tutors of Tomorrow

Opportunities for students to become Welsh Tutors of Tomorrow

The National Centre for Learning Welsh is looking for students to take part in its ‘Tutors of Tomorrow’ training scheme.

The Centre will run the scheme between Monday, 15 July and Friday, 23 August 2024, with the aim of introducing students to the Learn Welsh sector, and encouraging more young people to work as a tutor.

This is the third time for the Centre to run the scheme, which will include workshops with experienced Learn Welsh tutors and opportunities to observe classes on the Summer Course held by one of the Centre’s providers, Learn Welsh Cardiff, run by Cardiff University.

Meg Jones-Evans was one of the students on the course last year. Meg said, ''Words can't express how much I enjoyed the Tutors of Tomorrow course. From the first morning, I felt sure this was the best choice I’d made in years!

"It was a pleasure to be able to live my life for two weeks through the medium of Welsh, and to feel that the language represented more than school lessons and chatting with the family (as it was for me before that). By having the social element hand-in-hand with the great content, the Centre successfully created an unforgettable experience.

"The Welsh language is for all, and tutors have a vital role to play in ensuring all learners are welcomed. This was the most important message I took home from the scheme and it has inspired me to consider a career as a tutor."

Helen Prosser, Director of Teaching and Learning at the National Centre for Learning Welsh, added, "It was a real pleasure to spend two weeks in the company of 15 young people during July 2023.

"Following practical sessions, opportunities to observe lessons and sessions with guest speakers, I’m delighted to report some of the young people are already working as Learn Welsh tutors.

"We will have some of the most experienced tutors in the sector training on the course again in 2024.

"We welcome applications from students from all backgrounds, and look forward to offering them valuable learning and teaching experiences."

Helen added, "With such a demand for Learn Welsh tutors across Wales, we need a steady supply of new talent and this is a great opportunity for students to get a taste of the work.

"Students studying any subject can apply - we're looking for people who can inspire others to learn and speak Welsh, and who have strong Welsh language skills themselves.”

The closing date for applications for the scheme is 29 February and the successful applicants will be notified at the end of March.
