  • The National Centre for Learning Welsh

     The National Centre for Learning Welsh was established in 2016. The Centre supports and offers various opportunities for people to learn and enjoy the Welsh language. The Centre's local providers, located across Wales, run the Learn Welsh courses. Courses are available during the day and evening, face-to-face and in virtual classes. Courses are available on different levels, from beginners to experience learners. 10 March 2025

  • Get to know author, Siôn Tomos Owen

     Siôn Tomos Owen is a TV and radio presenter, writer, artist and poet. Siôn is from the Rhondda valley in South Wales. The National Eisteddfod is coming to the area in 2024. Siôn is the author of one of the Amdani books for Welsh learners. His first book, 'Y Fawr a’r Fach - Straeon o’r Rhondda', features many stories about the Rhondda area. Siôn is currently writing his second book, 'Y Fawr a’r Fach 2'. 04 March 2024

  • Get to know author, Meleri Wyn James

     At the Llŷn ac Eifionydd National Eisteddfod in 2023, Meleri Wyn James won the Prose Medal with her novel, 'Hallt'. The novel tells the story of a mother and her 16-year-old daughter, who has special needs. Meleri Wyn James is an author and editor for Y Lolfa. She has published books for both children and adults. 04 March 2024

     Over 150 learners will come together to discuss the 'Amdani' book series on Wednesday 6 March 2024, accompanied by some of the series' authors including Mared Lewis and Pegi Talfryn. 28 February 2024

  • Get to know author, Alun Ffred

     At the 2023 Llŷn ac Eifionydd National Eisteddfod, Alun Ffred won the Daniel Owen Memorial Award for the best novel. The novel, 'Gwynt y Dwyrain', is a detective story, and Alun’s first novel. Alun is now retired, but he was previously a Member of the Senedd for Plaid Cymru and the Welsh Government's Heritage Minister. Before that, Alun scripted and directed television programmes, including the popular comedy drama C'mon Midffild. 19 February 2024

  • Ask Myra

     Myra Dawson grew up in London. Myra's parents spoke Welsh and were originally from Ceredigion. And although her parents spoke Welsh at home, Myra did not speak Welsh with them. 50 years later, during lockdown, Myra decided she would like to learn her parents' language and registered on a course, held in a virtual classroom, with Learn Welsh Ceredigion - Powys.   • Opportunities for students to become Welsh Tutors of Tomorrow

     The National Centre for Learning Welsh is looking for students to take part in its ‘Tutors of Tomorrow’ training scheme. The Centre will run the scheme between Monday, 15 July and Friday, 23 August 2024, with the aim of introducing students to the Learn Welsh sector, and encouraging more young people to work as a tutor. 13 December 2023

  • Meet Chloe

This is the fifth time for the BBC and the National Centre for Learning Welsh to work together to hold the week, which is always popular. 05 October 2023

Fe ddechreuodd weithio fel tiwtor yn Nhalysarn a Bangor, cyn dod yn diwtor-drefnydd ardal Dwyfor ac yn ddiweddarach, yn diwtor-drefnydd ardal Arfon, gyda chyfrifoldeb am dîm o diwtoriaid amser llawn a rhan amser. Mae Bethan wedi gweithio ar hyd yr amser gydag un o ddarparwyr y Ganolfan Genedlaethol, Dysgu Cymraeg Gogledd Orllewin, sy’n cael ei gynnal gan Brifysgol Bangor, a bydd yn ymddeol eleni. Mae Tlws y Tiwtor yn cael ei roi i diwtor sydd wedi gwneud cyfraniad nodedig i’r maes, ac fe’i gyflwynwyd i Bethan ar faes Eisteddfod Llŷn ac Eifionydd gan Brif Weithredwr y Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol, Dona Lewis. Meddai Dona Lewis:  “Yn ogystal â sgiliau diamheuol Bethan fel tiwtor a rheolwr, mae Bethan wedi gweithio’n ddiflino i gefnogi dysgwyr a sicrhau bod cyfleoedd da iddynt ddefnyddio a mwynhau’r Gymraeg yn anffurfiol yn yr ardal.  Diolch enfawr i ti, Bethan, llongyfarchiadau a phob dymuniad da ar dy ymddeoliad.” Ychwanegodd Ifor Gruffudd, Cyfarwyddwr Dysgu Cymraeg Gogledd Orllewin: “Mae gan Bethan egni a brwdfrydedd anhygoel ac mae hi'n ymroi 100% i'w gwaith bob amser.  Chwaraeodd rôl hollbwysig yn ystod y pandemig, gan addasu’r ddarpariaeth wyneb yn wyneb yn llwyddiannus i gyfrwng rhithiol, yn ogystal â chefnogi tiwtoriaid Arfon i ddatblygu sgiliau TG, a gofalu am eu lles.  “Mae Bethan yn angerddol am gefnogi siaradwyr newydd i wneud defnydd o’r iaith tu allan i’r dosbarth ac mae wedi creu sawl partneriaeth yn lleol i groesawu a chefnogi dysgwyr.  Mae Bethan wedi gwneud cyfraniad anferthol i’r maes yn y gogledd orllewin – llongyfarchiadau mawr.” Meddai Bethan Glyn:  “Roedd hi’n dipyn o syndod clywed mod i wedi ennill Tlws y Tiwtor ond yn hyfryd bod hynny wedi digwydd yn Eisteddfod Llŷn ac Eifionydd, ardal sy’n bwysig iawn i mi.  “Mae hi wedi bod yn bleser gweithio yn y maes Cymraeg i Oedolion, a dw i wedi bod yn ffodus iawn o gael gweithio efo criw arbennig o bobl ar hyd y daith. Mae fy niolch yn fawr i bawb sy wedi bod yn rhan o’r tîm ac mae hi’n braf gweld mwy a mwy o bobl ifanc brwdfrydig yn dod i weithio yn y maes. “Ond yr hyn sy’n dod â’r pleser mwya ydy gweld datblygiad dysgwyr - yn dod yn siaradwyr newydd a mwynhau defnyddio’r iaith yn eu cymuned. Nid ar chwarae bach mae meistroli iaith ac mae hi mor bwysig i ni sy’n siaradwyr Cymraeg gefnogi a rhoi’r hyder i siaradwyr newydd ddefnyddio’r iaith o ddydd i ddydd. Diolch i bawb sy wedi gwneud yr ymdrech i ddysgu’n hiaith - dw i mor falch ohonoch chi i gyd!” Diwedd 05 August 2023

     Mwy o gyfleodd i fwynhau’r Gymraeg, wrth i’r cydweithio gryfhau rhwng Mudiad Meithrin a’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol Bydd Memorandwm Dealltwriaeth rhwng Mudiad Meithrin a’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol yn adeiladu ar y bartneriaeth sydd eisoes yn bodoli rhwng y ddau sefydliad, wrth iddyn nhw gefnogi polisi Cymraeg 2050 y Llywodraeth. Mae’r sefydliadau yn barod yn cydweithio ar brosiectau megis ‘Clwb Cwtsh’ sy’n cynnig cyfleoedd anffurfiol i rieni a gofalwyr plant bach i ddechrau dysgu Cymraeg, a chynllun ‘Camau’, sy’n rhoi hyfforddiant dysgu Cymraeg i ymarferwyr blynyddoedd cynnar. Bydd y Memorandwm newydd yn ffurfioli’r cydweithio, gan greu cyfleoedd pellach i gaffael a throsglwyddo’r Gymraeg, ac i gefnogi plant, teuluoedd a gofalwyr i ddysgu a mwynhau’r Gymraeg. Bydd cyfathrebu effeithiol yn chwarae rôl bwysig, gyda chyfarfodydd a diweddariadau rheolaidd er mwyn rhannu profiadau ac arbenigedd a datblygu syniadau i ddenu cynulleidfaoedd newydd at y Gymraeg. Bydd ymgynghori ar y cyd â’r cyhoedd, er mwyn adnabod yr anghenion dysgu Cymraeg. Bydd y ddau sefydliad hefyd yn cydweithio ar ymgyrchoedd, er mwyn manteisio ar eu rhwydweithiau gwahanol. Meddai Dr Gwenllian Lansdown Davies, Prif Weithredwr Mudiad Meithrin: “Mae Mudiad Meithrin a’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol yn rhannu’r un ymrwymiad i gynnig cyfleoedd i ddysgu, defnyddio, a mwynhau’r Gymraeg. “Trwy ffurfioli’r bartneriaeth rhyngom, gallwn gefnogi llwybr iaith ‘o’r crud i’r bedd’, gan gyfrannu at nod Llywodraeth Cymru o gyrraedd miliwn o siaradwyr Cymraeg.” Meddai Dona Lewis, Prif Weithredwr y Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol: “Mae creu partneriaethau grymus yn rhan bwysig o rôl y Ganolfan, wrth i ni sicrhau cyfleoedd i bobl ddysgu a defnyddio’r Gymraeg gyda’u teuluoedd, yn eu cymunedau, ac yn y gwaith. “Mae’r Memorandwm Dealltwriaeth yma yn adeiladu ar y cydweithio llwyddiannus sydd eisoes wedi digwydd rhwng y Ganolfan a’r Mudiad, ac edrychwn ymlaen at gefnogi’n gilydd fwyfwy er mwyn hwyluso taith iaith pob unigolyn yng Nghymru.” Cyhelir sgwrs gyhoeddus i drafod y cydweithio gyda Gwenllïan Lansdown Davies a Dona Lewis, am 3.00pm Dydd Llun, 7 Awst, ym Mhabell y ‘Big Top’, Maes D, ar faes Eisteddfod Llŷn ac Eifionydd. 07 August 2023

     A ‘papur bro’ is a Welsh-language community newspaper, and there are over 50 in Wales.  Normally, volunteers produce the ‘papur bro’.  Each ‘papur bro’ is different, but usually they all feature stories and pictures of local schools and societies, stories about interesting people in the area, recipes and puzzles. 03 March 2023

     National Centre for Learning Welsh appoints new Chief Executive Dona Lewis has been appointed Chief Executive at the National Centre for Learning Welsh.   • C'mon Cymru!

     The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has been a leader in promoting Cymraeg locally and internationally. Now, a new partnership between the FAW and the National Centre for Learning Welsh will strengthen Welsh skills among players and staff, and increase opportunities to learn and enjoy the language at a grass roots level.  As part of the partnership, the National Centre will develop a bespoke learning programme for the Cymru squad and support staff, which will deliver language training at different levels, from beginners to confidence-building. 20 October 2022

Learners enjoyed team-building sessions, Welsh lessons, a visit to the local pub in Llanuwchllyn and a music gig with the band, ‘Bwncath’.      BBC Cymru Fyw and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru have been working together to produce a series of micro plays that follow the story of a Welsh learner. The first in the series was 'Enfys' back in 2020. The play followed the story of Nick, who is learning Welsh, trying to complete his homework task. This year, three new episodes will be released during Wythnos Dathlu Dysgu Cymraeg, a celebration of learning Welsh, on BBC Radio Cymru. Melangell Dolma is the author of the micro plays – you can get to know her better with this short interview. 12 October 2021

Dechreuodd Rebecca “Becky” Evans, a gafodd ei geni a’i magu yn Harrogate, ddysgu Cymraeg ar ôl cwrdd â’i dyweddi Huw, a anwyd yn Ynys Môn. Roedd y cwpl yn gweithio fel peirianwyr sifil ar ffordd osgoi'r A483 yn y Drenewydd yng nghanolbarth Cymru pan wnaethant gwrdd bedair blynedd yn ôl. “Roedd cwrdd â Huw a’i deulu a’i ffrindiau yn golygu fy mod i’n ymgolli yn y Gymraeg ar unwaith,” meddai Becky, 29 oed. “Roedd yn teimlo’n naturiol mod i’n ymuno a dysgu ei siarad hefyd.” Trwy ymarfer gartref yn rheolaidd gyda Huw, roedd Becky yn sgwrsio yn Gymraeg yn fuan. Yna penderfynodd fynd gam ymhellach trwy gofrestru ar gwrs lefel Mynediad ar gyfer dechreuwyr gyda’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol. Yna aeth y gwaith â hi yn ôl i Birmingham am chwe mis lle parhaodd i ddilyn cwrs yng nghwmni 20 o gyd-ddysgwyr Cymraeg. Ddwy flynedd yn ôl, ar ôl iddi hi symud i fyw gyda Huw yng Nghaerdydd, aeth Becky ymlaen i ddilyn cwrs ar y lefel nesaf, Sylfaen, gyda Dysgu Cymraeg Caerdydd, sy’n cael ei gynnal gan Brifysgol Caerdydd ar ran y Ganolfan Genedlaethol. Mae Becky wedi gwneud cynnydd da ac yn ddiweddar wedi cychwyn cwrs lefel Uwch, a ddaw i ben yn 2022. 04 November 2020

  • Jazz wins prize

     Jazz yw enillydd Dysgwr yr Ŵyl AmGen Jazz Langdon, o Sir Benfro, yw enillydd Dysgwr yr Ŵyl AmGen, cystadleuaeth a gynhaliwyd ar y cyd gan yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, BBC Radio Cymru a’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol.  Mae Jazz, 27, sy’n byw yn Arberth, wedi mynd ati i ddysgu’r Gymraeg dros y ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf, ar gwrs sabothol Cymraeg Mewn Blwyddyn gyda Rhagoriaith.  Mae’n gydlynydd y Gymraeg yn ei swydd newydd fel athrawes yn Ysgol Tavernspite.  Mae’n canu gyda chôr ‘Bella Voce’ ac yn cael boddhad mawr wrth ddeall ystyr y caneuon ac wrth gymdeithasu gyda’i chyd-gantorion yn Gymraeg. “Mae’r Gymraeg wedi agor llawer o ddrysau yn fy ngyrfa,” meddai Jazz.  “Yn fy swydd dw i’n datblygu’r pwnc ac yn helpu athrawon eraill.  Dw i’n ceisio defnyddio’r iaith drwy’r amser.” Cyngor Jazz i ddysgwyr eraill yw “Siaradwch, siaradwch, siaradwch!”  Ychwanega: “Mae Cymru yn falch iawn o’i dysgwyr – mae eisiau iddyn nhw lwyddo ac mae’n awyddus i’w cefnogi.” 24 August 2020

     Mwy o oedolion yn dysgu Cymraeg yn ddigidol Mae cynnydd yn y niferoedd sy’n dysgu Cymraeg yn ystod y cyfnod cyfyngiadau symud, gyda dros 8,000 o ddysgwyr yn dilyn cyrsiau digidol gyda’r Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol. Mae cyrsiau ‘cyfunol’ cenedlaethol newydd, sy’n cyfuno dysgu o bell dan arweiniad tiwtor gyda dysgu ar-lein annibynnol, wedi denu 1,300 o ddechreuwyr. Mae’r cyrsiau rhad ac am ddim newydd ddechrau. Mae 89 o ddosbarthiadau rhithiol yn cael eu harwain gan diwtoriaid profiadol, ac yn parhau am gyfnod o 10 wythnos. The new service, called ‘Sianel Dysgu Cymraeg’ (Learn Welsh Channel) is part of S4C’s online, on-demand service, ‘S4C Clic’.  It will host a variety of programmes chosen with the Centre’s support, including popular series from the S4C archive as well as more recent content. Viewers will be able to use English subtitles or simplified Welsh subtitles on the programmes, which will also include series produced especially for Welsh learners. 17 September 2019

Author and actor, Gareth Thomas, will tell the story of Tryweryn and the village of Capel Celyn during the session, organised by Learn Welsh Gwent - run by Coleg Gwent on behalf of the National Centre for Learning Welsh - and Newport’s Welsh language festival, Gŵyl Newydd. 16 September 2019

     A new term of ‘Clwb Cwtsh’ Welsh taster courses is about to start The second year of the ‘Clwb Cwtsh’ – Welsh taster courses for the parents and carers of young children – is about to start. The scheme is the result of a partnership between early years specialists Mudiad Meithrin and the National Centre for Learning Welsh.      Tracy Davies, Hywel Dda University Health Board Learning Welsh with the ‘Learn Welsh’ programme has helped Tracy Davies in her role as a Mental Health Practitioner at Tŷ Myddfai Psychological Wellbeing Centre, Carmarthen. Tracy, who is responsible for a range of therapies, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, can now deliver services through the medium of Welsh. This benefits Tracy’s vulnerable patients, many of whom are first language Welsh speakers who find it easier to express themselves in Welsh. From time to time, Tracy also treats elderly patients, some of whom have suffered a stroke or are showing signs of dementia. Being able to treat all these patients in their first language, Welsh, facilitates treatment and ensures a detailed and correct assessment. 05 October 2018

  • Eisteddfod Taster Course

     Why not learn some Welsh to use at the Eisteddfod? A new Welsh language taster course will teach learners words and phrases to use at the National Eisteddfod, one of Europe’s largest cultural festivals, which this year visits Cardiff Bay (3-11 August). The six-hour course, which is being held in locations across Cardiff and further afield, teaches vocabulary relevant to the Eisteddfod, such as ‘cystadlu’ (compete), ‘llwyfan’ (stage), ‘stondinau’ (stands) and ‘corau’ (choirs). 21 February 2022

     Duolingo Welsh course reaches a million users Less than two years after its launch, at the beginning of this month, the Welsh course on Duolingo reached a million users. This is an in important milestone in the course’s journey and the volunteers who develop and maintain the course hope it will help the Welsh Government achieve its ambition of one million speakers by 2050, with 40% of the course’s users living in the UK.      From study partner to life partner – how learning Welsh brought Pontypridd couple together As romantics across Wales get ready to celebrate St Valentine’s Day (14 February), a Pontypridd couple have spoken about how learning Welsh brought them together. Mair Lenny Turner, and her husband, Drew, first met as students at Bangor University in 2010. Mair, originally from Aberystwyth and a fluent Welsh speaker, was studying for a PhD in Welsh, while Englishman, Drew, from Winscombe, Somerset was studying an MA in Chemistry. 29 September 2022

     It’s good to talk as new project brings Welsh speakers and learners together A new pilot project which matches Welsh speakers with Welsh learners is being trialled in four Welsh regions during the spring. The aim of the voluntary scheme, called ‘Siarad’ (the Welsh word for speak, pronounced ‘shaa-rrad’) is to raise the confidence of Welsh learners by giving them an opportunity to chat in an informal setting with fluent speakers. The learners will also be introduced to Welsh-medium leisure and cultural activities in their areas. 18 January 2018

     Cabinet Secretary for Education signs up for new online Welsh course Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Education, Kirsty Williams, has signed up for a new online Welsh language course, which is being launched at the National Eisteddfod in Anglesey this Thursday, 10 August. The free, 10-hour course is part of the ‘Work Welsh’ learning programme, a new initiative to strengthen Welsh language skills in the workplace, developed by the National Centre for Learning Welsh. 21 February 2022

     Scholarships for Welsh learners from Patagonia A woman from Patagonia, whose family roots are in Wales, is one of three people who have received a scholarship to study Welsh at Aberystwyth this summer. Noelia Sánchez Jenkins’ great great grandfather, Aaron Jenkins, was among the first Welsh settlers to travel on the ship Mimosa, from Liverpool to Patagonia, Argentina in 1865. Noelia joins Alcira Williams and Mariel Jones in receiving the scholarships, worth £2,000 each, which are funded by the National Centre for Learning Welsh. The scholarships will enable the three learners to spend one month learning Welsh with one of the National Centre’s providers, ‘Learn Welsh Ceredigion – Powys – Carmarthenshire’. 06 August 2017

     New show celebrates “unsung heroes” of the language A new theatre production which brings the history of the Welsh language alive will be premiered at the Maes ‘D’ learners’ pavilion at the National Eisteddfod in Anglesey at 12.00pm on Monday, 7 August. ‘Taith yr Iaith’ (Language Journey), a Welsh-language production written especially for Welsh learners, also pays tribute to the “unsung heroes” of the language, the thousands of adults who each year sign up for Welsh courses. Commissioned by the National Centre for Learning Welsh, the show has been produced by educational theatre company Mewn Cymeriad/In Character. 10 August 2017

     The National Centre for Learning Welsh will welcome tutors from across Wales to its national conference on Wednesday, 5 July as it marks its first operational year.      Recruitment campaign to attract more learners A new recruitment campaign has been launched to attract more people to learn Welsh. Over the summer months, a 30-second advertisement will be broadcast on ITV, Sky and S4C; a roadshow will visit community festivals and events, while advertisements will also appear on buses across Wales. The campaign’s theme is ‘reasons for learning’, inspired by research led by the National Centre, which looked at what motivates people to learn Welsh. 13 September 2017

  • Working with Duolingo

     The National Centre for Learning Welsh, the organisation responsible for the Welsh for Adults education programme, and Duolingo, the language-learning platform, have announced a new partnership programme. As part of the programme, the Centre will share its learning resources with Duolingo, so that the Welsh version of Duolingo’s free language-learning app uses the same language patterns and vocabulary taught on Welsh for Adults courses. 27 September 2018
